Stoke City have broken their club transfer record to sign Xherdan Shaqiri from Inter Milan for £12million.

Shaqiri - a Switzerland international who only joined Inter in January this year from Bayern Munich - has signed a five-year deal at the Britannia Stadium.

Stoke actually agreed the £12m fee with Inter over a month ago, but were forced to wait for a verdict from the player as to whether he wanted to move to the West Midlands.

Barcelona great Hristo Stoichkov has urged Pedro not to join Manchester United as he feels Louis van Gaal is "destroying" the club .

The Spain international is a transfer target for United but Stoichkov feels he would be better off staying with Champions League winners Barcelona.

Stoichkov barely featured under Van Gaal when the pair worked together at the Nou Camp and he was sold by the Dutchman in 1998, bringing an end to his second spell with the club.

Michael Carrick says increased competition for places will help Manchester United's title challenge this season.

United manager Louis van Gaal strengthened his midfield options with the summer signings of Bastian Schweinsteiger from Bayern Munich and Morgan Schneiderlin from Southampton.

However, Carrick, who has 380 appearances for United, says he is not worried at the prospect of being pushed down the pecking order at Old Trafford.

Swansea have re-signed goalkeeper Gerhard Tremmel on a two-year deal, the Premier League club have announced.

Tremmel's contract expired in the summer but he has agreed new terms at the Liberty Stadium despite interest from clubs in England and Germany.

"It's fantastic to be back at Swansea - this is where I want to be. This is a special club," Tremmel told the club's official website.
